Mark Dias and Staff Win 2011 CoBI Award for the Abusive Head Trauma Prevention Program
Mark Dias, M.D., FAAP, FAANS and his team of nurses, Kelly Cappos, Marie Killian, and Carroll Rottmund, have been selected by the Board of Directors for their important work on abusive head trauma, also known as Shaken Baby Syndrome. Dr. Dias is a pediatric neurosurgeon who began his research and prevention work in upstate New York in 1998 with the development of the Shaken baby Syndrome Prevention & Awareness Program. Results of the implementation of this program were dramatic, with a decrease in the incidence of infant abusive head injuries of 50%. In 2002, Dr. Dias brought the Abusive Head Trauma Prevention Program to Pennsylvania and the Shaken Baby Syndrome Education Act was passed in Pennsylvania. Dr. Dias and his team of nurses work together to provide education to every birthing and children hospital in the state of Pennsylvania. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) awarded the program a $2.8 million grant in 2007 to further expand their education and prevention efforts to pediatric and family practice offices so that “booster” training can be provided to parents at 2, 4, and 6 month appointments. Dr. Dias and his team are making a difference—“saving babies’ lives one family at a time.” The award was given formally on October 4, 2011 at CoBI’s 5th annual golf tournament in Malvern, PA.
