A Meaningful Life
Much of the rehabilitation for brain injury takes place quickly and in a hospital. People need to get stabilized, learn to walk, talk, remember things, and take care of themselves.
Then, they are discharged to remake their lives.
One question we all might ask is: Are there any specific things that really make a difference in terms of life satisfaction? There has been some research that says yes. What are those things?
- Having friends – being part of a community, having a social network, being “socially integrated.”
- Age - the older a person was at the time of injury, the more likely that he/she will be happy with life.
- Where you live--living in a regular home or apartment is associated with greater satisfaction than living in group homes.
What this means for rehabilitation practitioners is that treatment needs to push reintegration. Helping individuals rebuild or develop networks is really important in the long run. Consider including family and friends in sessions, focusing on skills needed for keeping friends, finding meaningful activities with others like volunteer work, sports, or hobbies. Think down the road—will the rehab we are doing today really improve this life?
